WJAK
hit the airwaves in December, 1954 with the first all
black format in West Tennessee under the ownership of
brothers William (Bill) Leech and Dr. Alex Leech, who
is currently Mayor of Madison County.
WJAK, with all African American announcers, provided
the platform for J. Butler,
Jim Dandy, Little Willie Poe, and even business woman
Nell Huntspon who worked at WJAK while she was in high
school and later became part owner of the station. Mark
Stansberry, a columnist for Ebony Magazine got his start
at WJAK as well as national game show host Wink Martindale,
a Jackson native, and son-in-law to Bill Leech, was
very much a part of the success of WJAK in its early
years.
WJAK
also launched the broadcasting career of James E Wolfe,
Jr. in Jackson-Madison County. Shortly after arriving
on campus at Lane College, he was hired by WJAK. It
was during this tenure at WJAK he launched his on-air
personality, "Super Wolfe".
The station kept the same format for nearly 15 years,
when, under new ownership, the format became rhythm
and blues. WJAK transformed to servicing the pop culture
in the early 1970's and continued until the mid 80's.
Gospel music was always a part of the listening fair,
but especially on Sunday when many quarters were heard.
In an acquisition by Quality Broadcasting, Gospel music
was started and continued until 1996.
Mr. James E. Wolfe, who had remained in broadcasting
organizing his own company, Wolfe Communications, Inc.,
purchased the WJAK radio station in 1996. The pioneering
station laid dormant until Mr. Wolfe could rejuvenate
the equipment and bring the "sleeping giant" back.
In 1999, Mr. Wolfe brought WJAK back to the airwaves
as a 24 hour broadcasting service to Jackson and West
Tennessee.
